President Tinubu Commissions Arterial Road N16, Boosting Connectivity in Abuja’s Katampe District

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially commissioned the newly completed Arterial Road N16, also known as Shehu Shagari Way, in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. The key infrastructure project connects Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway (Ring Road 1) to Arterial Road N20 (Wole Soyinka Way) and includes a major interchange and several adjoining roads, enhancing mobility across key districts including Katampe, Jahi, Maitama, and Mabushi.

The commissioning ceremony, held on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, marked another milestone in the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, focused on transforming Nigeria’s infrastructure landscape to promote economic development, social integration, and urban modernization.

Infrastructure as a Catalyst for Growth

Speaking at the event, President Tinubu underscored the pivotal role of infrastructure in national development. He emphasized that road networks like Arterial Road N16 are more than just transportation corridors — they are lifelines for commerce, social interaction, and regional connectivity.

“The completion of this vital corridor is a testament to our commitment to reshaping the urban fabric of Abuja and enhancing economic mobility across Nigeria,” Tinubu said.

The President also commended FCT Minister Barrister Nyesom Wike for ensuring the timely completion of the project, and praised the peaceful relocation of indigenous communities impacted by the construction. Addressing traditional rulers at the event, Tinubu said:

“They told me how cooperative you were. You collaborated with the FCT Minister and have been respectfully relocated. Not that we grabbed your land — you were compensated fairly.”

Project Execution and Compensation Strategy

In his remarks, Minister Nyesom Wike revealed that the Arterial Road N16 project was awarded in October 2024 and executed by China Geo-Engineering Construction (CGC). He noted that swift mobilization by the contractor reflected growing confidence in the FCT Administration’s improved project delivery and payment mechanisms.

Wike disclosed that residents affected by the project were paid 200% compensation, a proactive move that helped avoid resistance and ensure smooth project execution. He also confirmed that the relocation was handled in a transparent and humane manner, with affected individuals properly resettled before construction began.

“We made sure people received fair compensation and were resettled accordingly, which is why this project encountered no delays,” Wike stated.

Looking Ahead: A Vision for a Modern Capital

Wike also reassured President Tinubu that all projects awarded under his watch would be completed within the first three years of the current administration. His pledge forms part of a broader strategy to fast-track infrastructural development and restore public trust in government-led urban projects.

Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, also spoke at the event, acknowledging the President’s unwavering support and attributing the progress made in Abuja to Wike’s energetic leadership and administrative reforms.
