Ebonyi State Governor Launches EBOCAB Ride-Hailing Service to Improve Transport and Create Jobs

On May 28, 2025, the Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru, officially launched EBOCAB, a new ride-hailing transport service designed to improve movement around the state, create jobs for young people, and boost the local economy.

The launch took place at the EBOCAB Terminal in Abakaliki, the state capital. The event marked an important milestone in the governor’s goal of modernising Ebonyi’s transport system while addressing long-standing transportation challenges, especially around the Ebonyi State International Market.

🚖 What Is EBOCAB?

EBOCAB, which carries the slogan “Our City, Our Ride”, is Ebonyi State’s first official ride-hailing service. Similar to platforms like Uber or Bolt, the service allows passengers to book rides through a mobile app. The vehicles will operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, making it easier for people to move around the city safely—especially at night.

The project features 60 new pickup trucks and 30 sports utility vehicles (SUVs). These vehicles have been specially prepared for carrying passengers, including air travellers from Ebonyi’s airport and regular commuters in the capital and nearby towns.

🌍 Why Governor Nwifuru Launched EBOCAB

During the launch, Governor Francis Nwifuru explained that the idea for EBOCAB came from the need to stop the rise in harassment, theft, and intimidation by some tricycle (keke) riders at the Ebonyi International Market. The government wanted to provide a safe, digital, and regulated alternative to help people move freely and without fear.

“We created EBOCAB to ensure our people have a modern, safe, and smart way to move around,” said the Governor.

He added that EBOCAB would not only provide comfort and security but would also create employment opportunities and support his administration’s goal of growing the Ebonyi economy through innovation.

📲 How to Use EBOCAB

To use the EBOCAB service, users simply need to download the EBOCAB app from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store. The app allows riders to:

  • Book a ride

  • Track the driver in real-time

  • Pay digitally

  • See estimated arrival time

  • Rate the service

The system is built to connect users to nearby drivers within five minutes, offering a fast and smooth booking experience.

💼 Creating Jobs for Ebonyi Youth

Governor Nwifuru emphasized that EBOCAB is not just about transport—it’s also about youth empowerment. The service will employ many young drivers, technicians, and administrative workers. The governor believes this will help reduce youth unemployment, promote peace, and give people honest sources of income.

The EBOCAB Terminal, located near the Ecumenical Centre on Ogoja Road, is a fully equipped headquarters for managing the service. It will handle vehicle repairs, driver support, and customer service, helping to maintain high standards.

🚗 Why Pickup Trucks? Public Opinion is Mixed

Some members of the public have raised questions about using pickup trucks for a ride-hailing service. Pickups are traditionally used to carry goods, not people. Critics argue that the government should have focused on mass transit options like buses instead—especially since Abakaliki is a small city with less traffic compared to larger urban areas.

However, supporters say that the move is bold and forward-thinking. They believe it will bring dignity to transport services in the state and encourage the use of cleaner, safer, and trackable vehicles.

💬 Voices of Support

Prominent individuals in Ebonyi State have praised the governor for launching EBOCAB. Chief Godwin Ogbaga, former Minister of Power and Steel, said:

“This means Ebonyi citizens can now ride in brand new, air-conditioned vehicles. It’s a great step forward.”

The Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Collins Igboke, also highlighted that the system is digitally monitored and can be tracked for safety, making it a more secure way to move around the state.

📈 Part of a Bigger Plan for Ebonyi

EBOCAB is just one part of Governor Nwifuru’s broader development plan for Ebonyi State. Since taking office, he has focused on:

  • Infrastructure development

  • Agriculture

  • Job creation

  • Technology-driven governance

The ride-hailing service aligns with these goals and is expected to grow over time, with the government planning to add more vehicles and improve the technology.

🌟 Conclusion: EBOCAB Ushers in a New Era for Transport in Ebonyi

With the launch of EBOCAB, Ebonyi State has taken a big step into modern transport. While there are still questions and concerns, many believe this service will:

  • Make daily transportation easier and safer

  • Help reduce crime in transport

  • Create jobs for young people

  • Promote digital innovation

  • Support the local economy

Governor Nwifuru has made it clear: this is just the beginning of a smarter, safer, and more modern Ebonyi State.
