L.A. Area Mayors Unite to Oppose Federal Immigration Raids: “Political Theater Rooted in Fear”
In a powerful display of unity, thirty mayors from across the Los Angeles metropolitan area held a press conference on June 11, 2025, calling on the Trump administration to immediately halt federal immigration raids that have intensified across Southern California in recent days.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, flanked by fellow city leaders, delivered a strong rebuke of the federal government’s recent immigration enforcement actions, calling them a deliberate overreach of power and an assault on local authority.
“L.A. is part of a national experiment,” Bass said, “to determine how far the federal government can go in reaching in and taking over power from state and local leaders.”
Bass also drew attention to the enormous financial burden placed on taxpayers by the federal crackdown, noting that an estimated $134 million has already been spent deploying the Marines and National Guard to enforce immigration operations across California.
“All of our cities could use that money,” she said, stressing that the funding could be better directed toward housing, healthcare, education, and public safety rather than militarized immigration enforcement.
Local Communities in Fear
The emotional toll of the raids has been particularly acute in Paramount, a city in southern Los Angeles County that has seen ongoing protests and heavy enforcement activity.
“This has been one of the most devastating moments in recent memory,” said Paramount Mayor Peggy Lemons. “Some families are now too afraid to even leave their homes.”
Images from the area show California National Guard personnel stationed outside federal buildings while residents rally with American flags and protest signs, demanding an end to the heightened enforcement.
Veterans Speak Out Against Militarization
One of the most passionate voices at the press conference came from Huntington Park Mayor Arturo Flores, a Marine Corps veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Flores sharply criticized the federal government’s decision to deploy Marines for domestic immigration operations.
“The militarization of immigration enforcement has no place in our neighborhoods,” Flores said. “The deployment of Marines on U.S. soil is an alarming escalation that undermines the values of democracy.”
He added that such tactics do not contribute to public safety but instead instill fear among immigrant communities, damaging the relationships between residents and local law enforcement.
“We stand against these fear-based tactics that target immigrant communities and erode public trust,” he continued. “This is political theater rooted in fear.”
